About the artist: b. 1992 Alisha Marie was raised in Bass River, Nova Scotia and currently resides Calgary, Alberta. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics in 2018 from the Alberta College of Art + Design, and Level 1 certification in Expressive Arts Therapy in 2013 from the Prairie Institute of Expressive Arts Therapy. Alisha works across a diverse media primarily, ceramics and paper cutting. Inspiration for Alisha’s work comes from all aspects of life, including narratives surrounding personal and collective traumas, her own battles with mental illness, as well as dreams, culture, nature, and a sprinkle of intermittent psychosis.
Artist Statement: Inspired by the crossovers between various mythos, current events and personal narratives my practice revolves around written, pictorial, oral storytelling and the relationship between speaker and listener. I am a mixed media artist working primarily with handmade ceramic objects and paper cutting. I enjoy the unique object permanence of ceramics juxtaposed by the ephemeral qualities of cut paper. Through making things I am able to take up space. I make work because I am interested in finding my own internal balance and peace. I am a chronosyntric maker, I create work that takes a great deal of time and attention.
