About the artist: Marita Manson is an emerging artist in the field of ceramics. She holds a Bachelors of Science from the University of Victoria, and studied ceramics at the University of Victoria, Kootenay School of the Arts and the Reykjavik School of Visual Arts in Iceland. Marita has taught ceramics at Hands on Pottery, and currently works as a ceramics technician at the Cedar Hill Arts Centre. Recently Marita opened her own studio in Victoria, where she produces her own line of functional mid-range porcelain vessels, focused on the intersection of science and art.
Artist Statement: There is an interesting place where science and art meet. Here, mathematics can become a tangible object, and a work of clay is a product of physics and microbiology. I strive to use humour and playfulness to bring this idea to life. My imagery in this work is developed from a long ago frequent viewing of proteins and organisms through a microscope. With form I explore two separate ideas, one, drawing on brutalist and art deco architectural elements is precise, sometimes machined, while the other is focused on the material, showcasing the joys and pains of my technical processes.
