About the artist: Heather Sproat was raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta where she obtained her diploma in Graphic Design from Medicine Hat College, and later received a BFA from the University of Lethbridge. Looking for a new adventure, Heather began to focus on a new hobby, turned passion. She explored and developed her love of working with clay through Production Pottery classes at the New Brunswick Craft College. Heather now creates with clay from her quaint, in-home pottery studio. Continual inspiration from her surroundings and environment lead her to limitless exploration within the medium of ceramics.
Artist Statement: Over the course of history human activity has drastically altered natures habitats. One of the most significant influencers are the massive urban ecosystems that separate and fragment the natural world. This fragmentation creates isolation of the species and is a huge component of my work. My inspiration arises from the architecture within these urban cores and the wildlife that survive within it. My process of surface decoration directly responds to this dependant relationship between civilization and nature. Civilization being the photograph I distort before silkscreening onto the foundation of clay. Nature is the clay which can exist on its own.
